In schools across the United States, students begin their day by rising for the Pledge of Allegiance. Although some may argue participation should be optional, standing up for the Pledge is important for a myriad of reasons, demonstrating respect for those who fought and sacrificed themselves to protect our country and freedom.
A main reason that students should stand for the pledge is to honor the individuals who served in the military. From the American Revolution up until today, countless soldiers throughout our country’s history have given their lives so that Americans could live without fear. Standing for the Pledge each morning is the least we could do to show gratitude to those who died as well as to their families, respecting the sacrifices they so selflessly made. Even if some students do not fully understand this, especially elementary school children, standing while reciting the Pledge shows appreciation for the people who are the reason we have rights today, why our lives are so secure and comfortable.
Furthermore, it promotes an environment of unity and respect for students. Coming together to voice respect, pride and loyalty for the country establishes a more unified school community. In standing as one, facing the flag, putting a hand on their heart, and saying the same words of steadfast honor, all students are reminded that no matter how different they are in looks, personality, or origin, they can relate to each other in the aspect that they are all part of the United States.
Although some argue that people should not have to pledge allegiance to a country whose decisions have not all been benevolent in the past, CHS Globe states that “the Pledge of Allegiance is about pledging to make America the best place it can be, not to say that every choice America has ever made is right.” The choice to stand up for the pledge is not to express your political opinions on the US government, but to show basic respect for all the individuals who try their utmost best to make our country the most wonderful and free place it can be for all citizens.
Overall, students should stand for the pledge to promote unity in respecting those who sacrificed themselves for our country. Although it is a simple gesture, it carries a powerful message of appreciation for the things we can enjoy today as a result of people’s past sacrifices.
