The National Basketball Association is facing a major scandal after a massive sports rigging and gambling investigation led to the arrests of 31 people. Federal authorities reported a wide-ranging criminal operation involving both illegal betting on NBA games and underground poker games, where “high-tech cheating technology” was used to steal millions of dollars. Among those indicted include former NBA player and current Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, as well as current Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier.
Rozier’s arrest stems from allegations involving shared inside information about games and player performance with bettors. Officials claim that in March 2023, Rozier told associates he would leave a game early due to an “injury,” allowing them to place bets on his underperformance. Prosecutors say this is just one tactic employed by insiders to manipulate NBA games for illegal gains.
Billups — while not charged in the sports betting portion of the investigation — is linked to the underground poker operation. Prosecutors allege that the underground games took place in major cities such as Manhattan, Miami, Las Vegas, and the Hamptons, and used hidden cameras, marked cards, and other devices to cheat players out of millions. The scheme is also believed to involve several of New York’s major Mafia families, including the Bonanno, Gambino, Genovese, and Lucchese families.
The FBI has said the investigation spans eleven states and requires tens of millions of dollars to carry out. FBI Director Kash Patel called the operation “mind-boggling,” and warned that this event threatens the integrity of professional sports. He describes the case as a wake-up call for leagues navigating the growing legal sports betting industry.
Both Billups and Rozier have been placed on leave while the league cooperates with federal authorities. With the season just beginning, the arrests create a reputational crisis for the league. Teams may face increased scrutiny of player and staff activities, betting education programs could be expanded, and league partnerships with sportsbooks may be reevaluated.
It is unclear whether this is only a portion of a larger illegal gambling network. The indictments suggest a system that affected both on-court performance and off-court poker games. Experts say it highlights the risks that insider information poses as sports betting becomes more mainstream.
Players, coaches, and officials are expected to face stricter oversight going forward. The arrests also send a message that no one, no matter their position, is immune when it comes to federal investigations of criminal activity. As the NBA navigates the fallout, the league seeks to protect its reputation by ensuring the integrity of the game.
