On May 1, 2023, the annual Met Gala took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan, with this year’s theme being ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’ to pay homage to the late Chanel designer, Mr. Lagerfeld, who had been a regular attendee at the Met Gala before his passing in 2019.

The event was hosted by Penélope Cruz, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa, and Vogue’s Anna Wintour, who has been overseeing the Met Gala since 1995. Several noteworthy trends emerged from the gala, such as the prominent use of Lagerfeld’s signature colors of black and white, showcased by celebrities like Elle Fanning and Janelle Monáe. Many attendees also paid tribute to Lagerfeld’s tradition of closing Chanel shows with brides, resulting in a number of guests arriving dressed as brides themselves, including Dua Lipa and Rihanna. Additionally, the presence of camellias, Chanel’s signature flower, was seen on figures like Olivia Rodrigo and Bad Bunny. Lastly, feline-inspired fashion made a prominent appearance to honor Choupette, Lagerfeld’s beloved pet cat, with Doja Cat and Jared Leto among those sporting this style.

While numerous celebrities graced the event, a few stood out as best dressed in our opinion. Penelope Cruz captivated with her beautiful white gown and a translucent hood adorned with cascading gems and sequins on the bodice and skirt. Gisele Bündchen also made a stunning impression, wearing a long feathered cape over a sequined Chanel dress, exuding the elegance of a swan or angel. Another top pick for us was Anne Hathaway, who donned a white tweed gown featuring a full-body slit held together with pearl-adorned gold safety pins, showcasing both elegance and creativity.

Selecting the worst outfits becomes challenging when the overall quality was so high. However, we would have liked to see more creativity from some of the male attendees who opted for plain suits. Among them were Bradley Cooper, Harris Dickinson, Roger Federer, Tom Ford, Alexandar Skarsgård, and others. The Met Gala is renowned for its avant-garde fashion, and we anticipated more unexpected and imaginative ensembles rather than plain black suits.

Overall, the 2023 Met Gala delivered an impressive display of fashion and paid fitting tribute to the legacy of Karl Lagerfeld. The event celebrated his contributions to the fashion industry while providing a platform for creativity and artistic expression on the red carpet.
