With the 16th-overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers select: Jared McCain out of Duke University.
The TikToker turned pro player is quickly establishing himself as one of the best rookies that the NBA has seen in a while. Basketball fans once dismissed McCain as an underwhelming and under-sized guard, but many have been swayed by his explosive stats in recent games.
The 76ers squad has been extremely disappointing to begin the season. With an abysmal 7-15 record, the Sixers find themselves in 12th place in the Eastern Conference standings; just above the Washington Wizards. Fans had been anticipating break-out performances from the dynamic duo of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, but they have been overshadowed by the rookie McCain’s elite achievements.
McCain is now a serious contender for Rookie of the Year. He’s currently averaging 15.8 points, 2.6 assists, and 0.7 steals per game. His shooting accuracy is also impressive, coming out to 46.3%, all in his 25.6 minutes of playing time on the hardwood. As well as the fact that he has not missed a game this season yet.
McCain has started more games as the season progresses, playing alongside the likes of Tyrese Maxey, Kelly Oubre Jr., Guerschon Yabusele and an aging Paul George.
NBA scout Evan Tomes referred to McCain as a 6’3″ combo guard who has prolific shooting and is able to create space when needed. He can catch, dribble and shoot while maintaining good balance. He finds a lot of success in the mid-field with his floaters, handles and other useful tools in his arsenal.
Expect to see more of McCain in the news and on TikTok. If his current form continues, it is safe to say that the NBA has a future star in the making.
