WMGVSD’s (Ward Melville’s Girls Varsity Swim and Dive Team) had their final dual meet on Tuesday, October 22. The first championship meet of the postseason was Leagues, on October 29. After that, members of the team progressed to Counties, where the Girls 200 Free Relay qualified for the States championship! I took this special time in the season to interview WMGVSD’s two captains, Olivia Gamez, who is in her senior year, and Kate Gironda, a junior. I asked them about their feelings on the past season, as well as their thoughts on the future.
Caroline Qian: How has this past season been for the WMGVSD team? What are you looking forward to as a team?
Olivia Gamez: We have been faced with a lot of challenges as a team this season, especially at the beginning of the year going against a lot of out of league teams. Still, I feel like as the season has gone on, we have worked really hard to become better and are looking forward to a great postseason.
Kate Gironda: So far, our season’s going really well! We’re excited for the rest of our dual meets and the postseason championship meets.
CQ: What was your favorite moment of this season, whether it will be in the pool or out?
OG: My favorite moment this year was our first pasta party. It was really nice to see everyone bonding outside of practice.
KG: My favorite moment with our team is whenever we get to do team bonding activities, such as pasta parties, drylands, and relays.
CQ: Lastly, how has the role of being a captain altered your experience on the team, and what lessons has it taught you?
OG: In this season, being named captain has taught me to always be positive, even in face of a challenge. My positive attitude can really affect and help others on the team, especially with a leadership position.
KG: This season has taught me that I have to be patient, and also made me realize that it’s important to be surrounded by both positive and hardworking people.
