November 5 marked Election Day in the United States. The result saw Donald Trump winning the election and becoming the 47th president of the United States of America.
Trump was able to mount a momentous comeback to the White House following his violent attempt to overturn his loss in the 2020 election. He has defied two assassination attempts, two presidential impeachments, a criminal conviction and many other criminal charges, and the Republican Party now holds control of the White House and both chambers of Congress, which means they are able to pass any laws or acts without Democratic support being necessary. This election means many different things for a wide variety of different people. A variety of world leaders commented on the election results.
The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, expressed positive remarks about the election, as she is a strong Trump supporter. She also closely aligns herself with Elon Musk, who played a critical role in Trump’s campaign and will co-lead a new group, called the Department of Government Efficiency, in Trump’s second term. Meloni wrote on X, “Italy and the United States are ‘sister’ nations, linked by an unshakeable alliance, common values and a historic friendship. It is a strategic bond which I am sure we will now strengthen even more.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a speech in Budapest to other European leaders, “I am glad for this opportunity to meet and work together for Europe and for our nations. Yesterday, I spoke with President Trump, as many of you did. It was a productive conversation, a good conversation. Of course, we cannot yet know what his actions will be. But we do hope that America will become stronger. This is the kind of America that Europe needs. And a strong Europe is what America needs, to my mind. This is the connection between allies that must be valued and cannot be lost.”
Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated President-elect Trump on his election win and said the U.S. and China must “find a way to get along.” The relationship between China and the U.S. has been strained for some time, worsening significantly under the first Trump administration.
