On April 21st, 2017, juniors and seniors in Ward Melville physics classes went on a field trip to Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey. On this field trip, physics students were able to observe kinematics principles firsthand and collect lab data from three rides at the park. These three rides were Zumanjaro: Drop of Doom, (a drop tower attached the world-renowned roller coaster Kingda Ka) El Toro (a wooden roller coaster) and the carousel in the center of the park. Due to the trip being held on a day primarily for physics students and not a general operating day, lines were generally short and most physics students found that they were able to just walk onto roller coasters. The one exception to this was Kingda Ka, which, due to its well-renowned reputation, always had a long wait time throughout the day. Nevertheless, most students found it an enjoyable experience and a welcome reprieve before the onset of AP Exams and other standardized testing. To quote junior Andrew Khanschansoff, “Even though it’s right before AP week and exams are just around the corner, a school trip can really make you feel more at ease.”
