Kylo Ren: The new villain from Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Matthew Okrent, Staff Writer

Many have been waiting years for Star Wars to come out, and on December 18th, 2015, it finally did.  This movie set all new records worldwide, such as becoming the fastest film to take in a gross of one billion dollars in only twelve days, and becoming the biggest single weekend gross (opening weekend) with 529 million dollars.  The public has been waiting since 2012–the year the new movie was announced–for this film, but was the public satisfied after all of the waiting?  After all of the excitement of the movie, were people actually pleased with the performance, or was the audience of the opening night sadly let down by the movie?

The new movie seemed to follow a similar trend throughout: what was once old is new again.  The movie had a great resemblance to Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope in terms of major plot themes and general structure.  The director seemed to take ideas from the original trilogies and implement them in the new movie in a new way.  The special effects and many of the action scenes seemed to have a retro feel, similar to the original trilogy, but the effects were much better in quality than the original films.  But were people happy with this?

According to movie rating websites such as Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, public approval was high.  However, some are quick to point out the major flaws in the plot, which was also thought to be basic in comparison with other movies of the time, as well as the predictability within the movie.  Overall, it seems that the general public saw the beauty of the movie–a revitalization of the original trilogy that is captivating audiences worldwide and showing new generations the greatness of the Star Wars Trilogies.  Now, we all wait in anticipation for the next installment of the new trilogy, which is set to be released on December 15th, 2017.
