Ward Melville students took the field and embraced the cold Wednesday for the second annual Patriot Bowl. The event, a flag football tournament, fielded 16 six-person teams. Players–representing all three grades–were decked out in headbands, eye black, and their favorite college and professional jerseys. After a series of regular games and playoff games, team ‘Merica came out on top with a thrilling 3-2 overtime win over team WFYB. Following a late interception, senior John Day senior connected with fellow senior Connor Grippe for a touchdown to end it.

More importantly, the tournament was for a good cause. Patriot League, which hosted the event, is a growing Ward Melville club that gives back to veterans. As the winners, ‘Merica chose to donate the proceeds from the event to Operation Homefront, a non-profit organization that provides financial and morale assistance to military families. Says club advisor Mr. Cereola, “It’s just a great event to see students come together for a cause, compete with class, and just have a great time.”
