The Ward Melville Field Hockey team cruised to the state semifinals on Sunday, dominating Massapequa in a 5-0 victory. Ward Melville combined suffocating defense with four goals from team captain Kassidy Rogers-Healion to control the game throughout. Kerri Thornton provided the first Ward Melville goal on a penalty corner and assisted Rogers-Helion on two of her four goals.

Ward Melville won the #1 seed in the Class A playoffs following a 17-1 regular season, but the team’s title hopes were repeatedly in doubt. Sunday’s dominant victory comes on the heels of two nail-biters: a 2-1 win over Newfield and a thrilling 5-4 comeback win over Sachem East. Everything came together on Sunday though, and the team hopes to carry that momentum to the state semifinals on Saturday, November 14th, when the girls head upstate to take on Shenendehowa at Maine-Endwell High School.
